information about current government and private grants and contracts,
conference and training opportunities, and potential funding sources.



The Alaska Housing Finance Corporation (AHFC) has $1.5 million available
through it Beneficiary and Special Needs Housing Grant Program for the
development of rental housing for hard to serve persons who are severely
mentally ill. Another $200,000 is also available for operating expenses
related to this program. The deadline is May 7. For more information,

The Department of Health and Human Services has $40 million available for
their Community Access Program. This program assists communities and
organizations develop the infrastructure necessary to fully develop or
strengthen integrated systems of care that coordinate health services for
the uninsured and underinsured. The deadline is May 7. For more

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has
$2.4 million available to plan, design, and assess the feasibility of
implementing culturally appropriate mental health systems of care for those
American Indian and Alaska Native children, youth, and their families in
need. Approximately 7 to 9 grants will be awarded. This is the second
part of the "Circles of Care" grant program. Previous grantees in the
"Circles of Care" program are not eligible. Collaboration with tribal
colleges and universities is encouraged. The deadline is May 10. For more

SAMHSA also has funds for the Statewide Consumer Networks Grant
Program. Approximately $1.5 million will be awarded to organizations to
insure that consumers participate in the development of policies, programs
and quality assurance activities related to mental health. The deadline is

Key Bank supports a wide range of nonprofit organizations that focus on
health and human service issues, education, art and culture, and civic and
community issues. Proposals should include a general description of the
organization along with a brief outline of the specific request. Requests

The Hearst Foundation provide support to organizations that focus on
education, health, social services and emergency and direct food
assistance. The two foundations are administrated as one, and only one
grant proposal is required. Grants range from $4,000 to $20,000. A
two-page letter requesting a grant application is due May 15. For more

The 2001 Annual School on Addictions will be held from May 7-9 at the
Anchorage Sheraton Hotel. This year's theme is "Best Practices:
Collaboration for Recovery" and will provide current information on the

The beneficiaries of the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority include those
Alaskans who experience mental illness; mental retardation or similar
disabilities; chronic alcoholism with psychosis; or Alzheimer's disease or
