Dear Mental Health Consumers and Service Providers:

The Division of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities is pleased to announce the availability of $300,000 from the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority for mental health consumers as “One Time Mini-Grants” for FY02.  The maximum award amount will be limited to $2,000.00 per applicant.

Consumer mini-grants are an important component of a system delivering “client centered” services to promote recovery and stability.  These small grants can create significant opportunities for individuals served by the Trust.  These grant funds are available to mental health Trust beneficiaries statewide.  Trust beneficiaries include adults and children with a mental illness, without regard to whether they receive public or private services.  The Division encourages applicants to use non-profit or local governmental entities that are Division of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities (DMHDD) grantees and have regular contact with and assist Mental Health Trust beneficiaries. DMHDD grantee agencies are encouraged to assist consumers residing in their areas with the application process regardless of affiliation.  If you are a beneficiary and need assistance in locating a DMHDD grantee agency to submit your application through please contact us at 1-800-465-4828.  We will assist you in contacting an agency.

The scope of eligible expenses includes the basic medical, dental and eye care as before and also assistance with basic living needs not covered under current grants, such as transportation, clothing, and other daily living and quality of life enhancements.  These items and services will be considered for funding based on the ability to help the consumers attain and maintain healthy and productive lifestyles and are determined to be key supports in achieving recovery, stability and self-sufficiency.  The more documentation gathered on actual costs rather than estimations will be extremely important.

To apply, the attached application is to be filled out and submitted through the grantee agency on behalf of the beneficiary.  The applications must be received at the Juneau DMHDD office on or before January 10, 2002 at 4:30pm.  The applications may be mailed or delivered in person.  No faxed or e-mail applications will be accepted.

If you require assistance or more information you can contact us at 465–3370 or 1-800-465-4828.

Sincerely,
