Welcome to this List Serv sponsored by the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority’s Rural Funding Coordination Project.  These messages provide information about current government and private grants, conference and training opportunities, publications, and potential funding sources, with an emphasis on rural Alaska.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is accepting proposals for its Cash & Counseling Program.  The goal of the program is to expand a proven model of consumer-directed supportive services to more states, allowing thousands more older adults and people with disabilities to have choice and control over the care they receive.  The deadline for the intent-to-reply (required) is February 13.  The proposal is due on March 31.  For more information, contact Kristin Simone at 617-552-0620 or visit www.cashandcounseling.org.

 

The National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression is accepting applications for its 2004 Independent Investigator Awards.  These awards support research into the causes, cures, treatments, and prevention of severe psychiatric brain disorders.  Awards of up to $50,000 a year for two years are available.  The deadline is March 5.  For more information, call 800-829-8289 or visit www.narsad.org/research.

 

The Brookdale Foundation Group provides funding through its Group Respite Program, which is designed to assist community agencies in developing respite services for people with Alzheimer’s disease and their families.  The goal of the program is to offer opportunities for persons with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia to engage in a program of meaningful social and recreational activities in a secure and supportive setting in order to maximize their cognitive and social skills.  The program also offers relief to family members and other primary caregivers.  There is no deadline.  For more information, contact Carmen Mendieta at 510-540-6734 or visit http://www.brookdalefoundation.org/brkhello.html.

 

ConocoPhillips Alaska provides grants to nonprofits that improve the quality of life for Alaskans in such areas as human services and education.  There is no deadline for grants under $5,000.  For larger grants, the deadline is September 1.  For more information, contact Nancy Schoephoester at 907-265-6182 or visit www.conocophillips.com.

 

The Manager’s Guide to Program Evaluation: Planning, Contracting, and Managing for Useful Results, outlines how an organization can benefit from appraising it’s programs, and gives advice on designing and carrying out evaluations and reporting the results.  The cost is $25. The Anchorage screening of West 47th Street will take place on at 7:00 pm on Thursday, February 5 at the University of Alaska Anchorage Wendy Williamson Auditorium.  The film reveals the human face of mental illness – and the faith and courage with which its victims fight to recover control of their lives.  Following the screening, a panel of mental health professionals will present information on mental illness and answer audience questions.  Admission is free.  For more information, contact Kris Rognes at 907-261-5317.

The beneficiaries of the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority include those Alaskans experiencing mental illness; developmental disabilities; chronic alcoholism; or Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia.  You can learn more about the Trust at www.mhtrust.org.

 

The Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority's Small Projects Funding program is designed to create new services of direct benefit to Trust beneficiaries.  These services are not normally funded by another part of government. They can be

innovative, new program ideas, or substantially improve and supplement existing activities.  They can also significantly increase the quality of ongoing projects.  Each small project is limited to a maximum of $10,000. The intent is to spend

half of the Small Projects Fund ($250,000 yearly) on high quality rural projects.
