Welcome to this List Serv sponsored by the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority’s Rural Funding Coordination Project.  These messages provide information about current government and private grants, conference and training opportunities, publications, and potential funding sources, with an emphasis on rural Alaska.

 

The Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority is seeking applications for individuals who are willing to serve as a Trustee and on the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority’s board of directors.  The board meets quarterly, with committee meetings at least monthly.  Trustees are responsible for developing the state’s comprehensive integrated mental health program, overseeing the management and investment of the Trust’s cash and land assets, and allocating Trust income among services that benefit trust beneficiaries.  Trustees are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the legislature.  The deadline is January 31.  For more information, contact Jeff Jessee at 907-269-7960 or visit www.mhtrust.org.

 

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is accepting applications for its Circles of Care Program.  The program provides tribal and urban Native communities with tools and resources to design systems of care to support mental health services for children, youth, and families.  Grants allow the building of infrastructure to increase the capacity and effectiveness of behavioral health systems serving Native communities.  Approximately $2.4 million will be available for 7 to 9 awards in FY 2005.  The deadline is February 25.  For more information, contact Jill Shepard Erickson at 240-276-1926 or visit www.samhsa.gov.

 

The Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation is accepting applications for its Quality of Life Grants Program.  Grants support research on treatments for people living with paralysis caused by spinal-cord injuries, and also address the needs of their families and caregivers.  Grants of up to $25,000 will be awarded.  The deadline is March 1.  For more information, call 800-225-0292 or visit www.christopherreeve.org.

 

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in collaboration with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality is accepting applications for its Prescription for Health Program.  The program is designed to develop, test, evaluate and disseminate creative, practical strategies to promote healthy behaviors in primary care practices by targeting four behaviors.  Those behaviors are lack of physical activity, poor diet, tobacco use and risky use of alcohol.  The deadline is March 7.  For more information, contact Maribel Cifuentes at 303-724-9771 or visit www.prescriptionforhealth.org.

The Alaska Railroad provides grants to community organizations located along the railbelt from Seward to Fairbanks.  They devote most of their giving to social service and community service agencies.  Proposals are reviewed quarterly.  For more information, call 907-265-2695 or visit www.alaskarailroad.com.

The Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority's Small Projects Funding program is designed to create new services of direct benefit to Trust beneficiaries.  These services are not normally funded by another part of government. They can be

innovative, new program ideas, or substantially improve and supplement existing activities.  They can also significantly increase the quality of ongoing projects.  Each small project is limited to a maximum of $10,000. The intent is to spend one-half of the Small Projects Fund ($250,000 yearly) on high quality rural projects.
