Welcome to this List Serv sponsored by the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority’s Rural Funding Coordination Project.  These messages provide information about current government and private grants, conference and training opportunities, publications, and potential funding sources, with an emphasis on rural Alaska.

 

The State Department of Education and Early Development is accepting applications for the Governor’s Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities grant program.  The purpose of the program is to provide competitive grants to organizations that are working in partnership within their community and schools to provide drug and violence prevention programs.  Approximately 8 to 10 grants of between $40,000 and $50,000 each for three years will be provided to organizations, school districts, or other public or private agencies.  The deadline is April 16.  For more information, contact Conchita McKnight at 907-465-8717 ort visit www.eed.state.ak.us.

 

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is accepting letters of intent to apply for its Changes in Health Care Financing and Organization Program.  The program focuses on research, demonstration, and evaluation projects that examine major changes in health-care financing and their effects on public policy.  There is no deadline.  For more information, call 202-292-6700 or visit http://www.rwjf.org/applying/cfpOpen.jsp.

 

Seventh Generation Fund is dedicated to promoting and maintaining the uniqueness of Native Peoples and nations.  The Fund facilitates the self-help efforts of grassroots Indigenous peoples to organize and rebuild healthy communities through an integrated program of advocacy, management support, small grants, training, and technical assistance.  The deadline is June 1.  For more information, contact Christopher Peters at 707-825-7640 or visit www.7genfund.org.

 

The Altria Group provides domestic violence grants to nonprofit organizations that strengthen the safety net that helps victims become survivors.  They also fund programs that raise the awareness about available services and the issue of domestic violence through local and regional public awareness campaigns.  There is no deadline.  For more information, view http://www.altria.com/responsibility/04_05_01_02_00_domviol.asp.

The Alaska Rural Health and Primary Care Conference will bring together
leaders from primary care clinics, hospitals, and a myriad of health care
agencies to discuss critical rural health issues on March 2- 3.

The Traumatic Brain Injury – The New Frontier Conference will be held March 7-9 at the Anchorage Hilton Hotel.  The goal of the conference is to assist survivors of traumatic brain injuries and their families and to provide baseline training for service providers.  For more information, contact Sharon Walluk at 907-269-3619 or email her at Sharon_walluk@health.state.ak.us.

 

Funding Sources for Children and Youth Programs lists more than 1,400 grant programs run by foundations, government agencies, and companies.  Each program description includes requirements, restrictions, application deadlines, typical grant amounts, sample awards, and contact information.  The grants are indexed by location, subject, and type of award, such as capital projects or scholarships.  The book also includes a brief guide to writing proposals.  The cost is $39.95.  For more information, call 203-226-3571 or visit www.greenwood.com.

The beneficiaries of the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority include those Alaskans experiencing mental illness; developmental disabilities; chronic alcoholism; or Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia.  You can learn more about the Trust at www.mhtrust.org.

 

The Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority's Small Projects Funding program is designed to create new services of direct benefit to Trust beneficiaries.  These services are not normally funded by another part of government. They can be

innovative, new program ideas, or substantially improve and supplement existing activities.  They can also significantly increase the quality of ongoing projects.  Each small project is limited to a maximum of $10,000. The intent is to spend

half of the Small Projects Fund ($250,000 yearly) on high quality rural projects.
