The Center for Substance Abuse Prevention is accepting applications for its Minority Substance Abuse/HIV/Hepatitis Strategic Prevention program.  The goal is to assist in building a solid foundation for delivering and sustaining effective substance abuse prevention and related services.  The program aims to engage community level nonprofit entities to prevent and reduce the onset of substance abuse, and transmission of HIV and hepatitis among minority populations.  The deadline is March 17.  For more information, contact Claudia Richards at 240 276 2400 or visit www.samhsa.gov.

The American Legacy Foundation is soliciting proposals for its Circle of Friends Women Unite to be Smoke Free program.  The grants are for organizations not traditionally involved in tobacco control; to help women quit smoking more easily; and to study issues and concerns that encourage women to start smoking.  There is no deadline.  For more information, call 202 454 5555 or visit www.americanlegacy.org.

Raising More Money: The Ask Event Handbook outlines the ask event which is a one hour fundraising appeal that is designed to tell potential donors about a charity with the goal of building them into long term supporters.  The book provides detailed information on how to plan the event, including budgeting, assembling staff and board members to help, and exploring ways to acknowledge the contributions donors make.  The cost is $49.95.  For more information, call 888 322 9357.

The beneficiaries of the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority include those Alaskans experiencing mental illness; developmental disabilities; chronic alcoholism; or Alzheimer's disease or related disorders.  You can learn more about the Trust at www.mhtrust.org.

The Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority, Small Projects Funding program is designed to create new services of direct benefit to Trust beneficiaries.  These services are not normally funded by another part of government. They can be innovative, new program ideas, or substantially improve and supplement existing activities.  They can also significantly increase the quality of ongoing projects.  Each small project is limited to a maximum of $10,000. The intent is to spend one half of the Small Projects Fund ($250,000 yearly) on projects that serve beneficiaries in rural areas.
