Project. These messages provide information about
current government and private grants, conference
and training opportunities, publications, and
potential funding sources, with an emphasis on rural
Alaska.
The State
Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) and
the Denali Commission is accepting letters of
interest for its Statewide Youth Psychiatric
Facilities program. The goal is to assist DHSS
and the Denali Commission in determining the need
and readiness for expanded or enhanced facilities by
agencies that serve or have a desire to serve
Alaska's children experiencing Severe Emotional
Disturbances (SED). DHSS is working with the Denali
Commission to identify potential projects related to
expanding bed capacity in Alaska for SED youth.
This is not a procurement process to award funds.
Organizations that may have ideas for developing
facilities for at risk children and youth may also
use this format to describe needed projects for
potential funding. The deadline is November 4. For

The State
Division of Public Health is accepting proposals
for its Tobacco Prevention and Control Community
Grants program. The goal is to select 3 to 5
grantees serving regions that are not currently
covered by this grant program. The deadline is

The U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services is
accepting proposals for its Healthy Behaviors in
Women program. The purpose of the program is to
develop and demonstrate creative and innovative
approaches that are effective in reducing the
prevalence of overweight/obesity in women by
increasing the number of women who adopt positive
and healthy lifestyles. Approximately $450,000 is
available for about 3 awards. The deadline is

The U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services is
accepting applications for its Maternal and Child
Health Pipeline Training program. The goal of
the program is to promote the development of a
culturally diverse and representative health care
workforce by recruiting, training, and retaining
students from under-represented minorities into
maternal and child health professions.
Approximately $680,000 is available for about 4
awards. The deadline is December 2. For more

The Gerber
Foundation is accepting letters of inquiry for
grants of up to $1 million each over three years
that will support research on pediatric health and
nutrition, and the effects of environmental hazards
on children before birth to age 3. The deadline is

The Seva
Foundation supports grassroots partnerships with
Native Americans organizations who have devised
their own solutions to spiritual and cultural

Public Relations Handbook for Nonprofits: A

beneficiaries of the Alaska Mental Health Trust
Authority include those Alaskans experiencing mental
illness; developmental disabilities; chronic
alcoholism; Alzheimer's disease or related
disorders. You can learn more about the Trust at

The Alaska
Mental Health Trust Authority is accepting
proposals for its Small Projects Funding
program. The program is designed to create new
services of direct benefit to Trust beneficiaries.
These services are not normally funded by another
part of government. They can be innovative, new
program ideas, or substantially improve and
supplement existing activities. They can also
significantly increase the quality of ongoing
projects. Each small project is limited to a
maximum of $10,000. The intent is to spend one-half
of the Small Projects Fund ($250,000 yearly) on
projects that serve beneficiaries in rural areas.
The deadlines are June 1, October 1, and February
