Welcome to this List Serv sponsored by the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority’s Rural Funding Coordination Project.  These messages provide information about current government and private grants, conference and training opportunities, publications, and potential funding sources, with an emphasis on rural Alaska.

 

The State Department of Health and Social Services is requesting letters of interest from nonprofits, adult educational organizations, and governmental agencies who provide services to senior citizens who want to return to the mainstream workforce.  The program is for people who are 55 years or older and who are low income.  The deadline is November 30.  For more information, contact Jeff Kemp at 907-465-4872 or visit www.hss.state.ak.us.

 

The Alaska Housing Finance Corporation (AHFC) is requesting proposals under its Homeless Assistance Program.  This program is designed to meet the housing needs of homeless and near-homeless persons.  The deadline is November 5.  For more information, contact Kris Duncan at 907-330-8276 or visit www.ahfc.state.ak.us.

 

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Rural Health Policy provides funding to rural communities to purchase automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and provides training in their use and maintenance.  Awards must be made to community partnerships.  To apply for a grant you must request an application package by calling 877-477-2123 or visit http://ruralhealth.hrsa.gov/funding/aed.htm.

 

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is soliciting proposals for its Substance Abuse Policy Research Program.  The program is designed to encourage experts in public health and other behavioral and policy sciences to address policy issues related to substance abuse.  Grants of up to $400,000 are available for research and evaluation projects that examine policies designed to reduce the harm caused by the abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs in the United Stated.  The deadline is November 7.  For more information, contact Tracy Enright Patterson at 336-716-5170 or visit www.saprp.org.

 

The National Organization on Disability and the United Parcel Service is accepting applications for it Accessible America Award.  This award recognizes outstanding community practices that improve living conditions for disabled people and can be duplicated elsewhere.  Awards of up to $25,000 are available for projects to help disabled people participate in community life, attend cultural events, and vote.  The deadline is October 31.  For more information, contact Nancy Starnes at 202-293-5960 or visit www.nod.org.

 

 

The Klingenstein Third Generation Foundation provides funding to nonprofit organizations that provide services in the mental health field, focusing on innovative programs that deal with childhood/adolescent depression and ADHD.  The foundation funds the development of pilot programs, treatment manuals, training, and dissemination.  There is no deadline.  For more information, contact Sally Klingenstein Martell at 212-492-6179 or visit www.ktgf.org.

Capital Campaigns: Constructing a Successful Fund Raising Drive, by Edward Schumacher, helps trustees make decisions about capital campaigns and provides an understanding of what will be required of them in the process.  The publication starts with the basics: the costs involved, what board members will be asked to do, and the distinct phases of a capital campaign.  It also provides guidance on critical decisions, such as whether to make endowment fund raising part of the campaign, and what an organization can do if it falls short of its goal.  The cost is $19.95.  For more information, call 202-452-6262 or visit www.ncnb.org.

The Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority's Small Projects Funding program is designed to create new services of direct benefit to Trust beneficiaries.  These services are not normally funded by another part of government. They can be

innovative, new program ideas, or substantially improve and supplement existing activities.  They can also significantly increase the quality of ongoing projects.  Each small project is limited to a maximum of $10,000. The intent is to spend

half of the Small Projects Fund ($250,000 yearly) on high quality rural projects.
