Welcome to this List Serv sponsored by the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority, Rural Funding Coordination Project.  These messages provide information about current government and private grants, conference and training opportunities, publications, and potential funding sources, with an emphasis on rural Alaska.

 

The Alaska Center for Rural Health (ACRH) strives to improve access to a comprehensive, culturally relevant health care system for rural Alaska by providing information, coordination, technical assistance, and professional development to rural health providers and systems.  ACRH provides technical assistance to rural health providers and communities, assists state, local and federal governments clarify and carry out their rural health policies, and publishes a rural health newsletter.  For more information on ACRH, contact Beth Landon at 907-786-6589 or visit http://www.ichs.uaa.alaska.edu/acrh/

 

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is soliciting letters of intent for its Health Behavior Change in Mental Disorders Modeled from HIV Interventions program.  The purpose of this program is to encourage innovative research in health behavior change among those with mental disorders that is informed by research from behavioral interventions for HIV/AIDS.  Approximately $1.5 million is available for about four to five awards.  The deadline for the letter of intent is November 21.  The application is due December 19.  For more information, contact William Riley at 301-435-0301 or visit http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-MH-06-002.html.

 

The Gleitsman Foundation is accepting nominations for its 2006 Citizen Activist Award.  The award is given to outstanding individual leaders working for social justice.  The honorees will share a $100,000 cash prize.  The deadline is November 4.  For more information, call 818-995-0090 for visit www.gleitsman.org.

Handbook of Practical Program Evaluation is designed to provide people who evaluate, finance, and operate programs with advice on how to assess their efficiency and effectiveness.  The handbook is divided into four sections that discuss how to design program evaluations, collect information about programs, analyze those data, and manage evaluation projects.  It presents a variety of options and approaches for assessing a program's effectiveness and offers advice on how to avoid investing too much money or time in the evaluation process.  The cost is $65.  For more information, call 800-956-7739 or visit www.josseybass.com.

The beneficiaries of the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority include those Alaskans experiencing mental illness; developmental disabilities; chronic alcoholism; Alzheimer's disease or related disorders.  You can learn more about the Trust at www.mhtrust.org.

 

The Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority is accepting proposals for its Small Projects Funding program.  The program is designed to create new services of direct benefit to Trust beneficiaries.  These services are not normally funded by another part of government.  They can be innovative, new program ideas, or substantially improve and supplement existing activities.  They can also significantly increase the quality of ongoing projects.  Each small project is limited to a maximum of $10,000.  The intent is to spend one-half of the Small Projects Fund ($250,000 yearly) on projects that serve beneficiaries in rural areas.  The deadlines are June 1, October 1, and February 1.  For more information, call 907-269-7960 or visit www.mhtrust.org.
