Welcome to this List Serv sponsored by the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority’s Rural Funding Coordination Project.  These messages provide information about current government and private grants, conference and training opportunities, publications, and potential funding sources, with an emphasis on rural Alaska.

 

The State Office of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is soliciting letters of interest and proposals for the FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders) Training Certification Mini-Grant program.  The goal of the program is to provide small training grants to those agencies that have Certified FAS 101 Trainers.  The purpose of these funds is for training associated costs such as materials, resources, presentation equipment, supplies and staff time.  The maximum award for each applicant is $5,000.  The deadline is August 1.  For more information, contact Jenny Huntley at 907-465-1187 or visit www.hss.state.ak.us.

 

The Center for Substance Abuse Treatment is accepting applications for its Residential Treatment of Pregnant and Postpartum Women program.  The goal of the program is to expand the availability of comprehensive, high quality residential treatment services for pregnant and postpartum women who suffer from alcohol and other drug use problems, as well as impacted infants and children.  Approximately $3 million is available for between 6 and 9 awards, ranging from $350,000 to $500,000 in total costs.  The deadline is July 23.  For more information, contact Linda White Young at 301-443-8392 or visit www.samhsa.gov.

 

The Center for Mental Health Services is accepting applications for its Cooperative Agreements for the Comprehensive Community Mental Health Services Program for Children and their Families.  The program is designed to provide funding to organizations that develop community service systems and provide services for the targeted population.  This program is limited to public entities and tribal organizations.  Approximately $5 million is available.  The deadline is August 5 and October 15.  For more information, contact Rolando Santiago at 301-443-1333 or visit www.samhsa.gov.

 

The American Dental Association Foundation’s Samuel Harris Fund for Children’s Dental Health is accepting applications from nonprofit organizations that seek to improve the dental health of economically disadvantaged children.  Grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded for community-education programs designed to improve children’s oral health.  The deadline is July 11.  For more information, call 312-440-2547 or visit www.ada.org.

 

The Jacob & Valeria Langeloth Foundation is accepting letters of intent to organizations that promote and support effective and innovative practices and policies related to recovery from accidents, illness, or other traumas.  The foundation focuses on programs that encourage an understanding of the physical, emotional, and social value of convalescence in health care, especially in underserved populations.  The deadline is August 1.  For more information, call 212-687-1133 or visit www.langeloth.org.

 

The Tides Foundation is accepting letters of intent for Rapid Response Grants from the Fund for Drug Policy Reform.  These grants support efforts to change punitive and other drug policies at the local, state, and national levels through advocacy, education, grassroots organizing, and outreach.  Grants range from $10,000 to $15,000.  There is no deadline.  For more information, call 212-509-1049 or visit www.tidesfoundation.org.

Holland America Line Family of Companies provides small grants to nonprofit organizations in communities where the company operates.  They also offer reduced-rate Alaska or Caribbean cruises to nonprofit organizations to be auctioned or used as a raffle prize at fundraising events.  For more information, call Kathy Newman at 907-272-9418.

 

A Profile of New Health Foundations, May 2003 provides a snapshot of the characteristics and grant making priorities of 165 health foundations formed when nonprofit organizations became for-profit companies.  These foundations have combined assets of more than $16.4 billion.  The booklet lists the assets, year of conversion, tax-exempt status, grant-making areas, location, and Web site of each of the organizations surveyed.  The cost is $30.  For more information, call 202-452-8331 or visit www.gih.org.

The Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority's Small Projects Funding program is designed to create new services of direct benefit to Trust beneficiaries.  These services are not normally funded by another part of government. They can be

innovative, new program ideas, or substantially improve and supplement existing activities.  They can also significantly increase the quality of ongoing projects.  Each small project is limited to a maximum of $10,000. The intent is to spend

half of the Small Projects Fund ($250,000 yearly) on good rural projects.
