Welcome to this List Serv sponsored by the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority’s Rural Funding Coordination Project.  These messages provide information about current government and private grants, conference and training opportunities, publications, and potential funding sources, with an emphasis on rural Alaska.

 

The State Office of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is requesting proposals for community-developed innovative programs to address the prevention of alcohol-related birth defects, and the improvement of services to those individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) and their families.  Programs should promote sustainable systems change.  The grants are divided into two categories.  Category 1 projects, which are aimed at encouraging smaller organizations to apply, and to identify smaller projects that can enhance existing larger agency programs and services, can have a budget up to $9,999.  Category 2 projects can have a budget of up to $50,000.  The deadline is August 26.  For more information, contact Jenny Huntley at 907-465-1187 or visit www.hss.state.ak.us.

 

The Center for Mental Health Services has funds available for Knowledge Dissemination Conference Grants.  The purpose of the grants is to disseminate knowledge about the practices within the mental health services and substance abuse prevention and treatment fields, and to integrate that knowledge into real-world practices in an effective and efficient manner.  Grant awards are expected to range from $25,000 to $50,000.  Indirect costs are not allowed.  The deadline is September 10.  For more information, contact David Morrissette at 301-443-3653 or visit www.samhsa.gov.

 

The Alcohol Beverage Medical Research Foundation is accepting applications to conduct research on alcohol consumption and its effects.  The foundation supports bio-medical, bio-behavioral, and psychosocial research in areas that include, but are not limited to, transitions in drinking behavior; the effects of moderate alcohol use on health and well-being; the behavioral and biomedical effects of alcohol; and the etiology of alcohol abuse.  Grants of up to $100,000 over two years are available.  The deadline is September 1.  For more information, call 410-821-7066 or visit www.abmrf.org.

 

The Ronald McDonald House Charities is accepting letters of inquiry for grants that support programs that improve the health and well being of children.  Programs should address a significant funding gap or critical opportunity, have long-term impact in terms of duplication or reach, and produce measurable results.  The deadline is September 1.  For more information, call 630-623-7048 or visit www.rmhc.org.

The National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression provides funding for scientific research into the causes, cures, treatments and prevention of severe psychiatric brain disorders, such as schizophrenia and depression. AT&T Alascom provides funding for a wide variety of nonprofit organizations that provide a significant benefit to the social fabric of a community.  There are no deadlines.  For more information, contact Cathy Opinsky at 907-264-7274.

 

Making the Most of Volunteers offers advice on the most efficient use of volunteers by drawing on a study of hundreds of programs that rely on volunteers.  The report illustrates the importance of providing supervision to volunteers, and talks about the costs of volunteer programs.  The cost is $5, or the report can be downloaded for free from the website.  For more information call 215-557-4400 or visit www.ppv.org

The Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority's Small Projects Funding program is designed to create new services of direct benefit to Trust beneficiaries.  These services are not normally funded by another part of government. They can be

innovative, new program ideas, or substantially improve and supplement existing activities.  They can also significantly increase the quality of ongoing projects.  Each small project is limited to a maximum of $10,000. The intent is to spend

half of the Small Projects Fund ($250,000 yearly) on good rural projects.
