Welcome to this List Serv sponsored by the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority's Rural Funding Coordination Project.  These messages provide information about current government and private grants, conference and training opportunities, publications, and potential funding sources, with an emphasis on rural Alaska.

The State Division of Public Health is requesting proposals for its Tobacco Prevention and Control (TPC) Community Grants Program.  The goal is to establish, facilitate and strengthen local tobacco prevention and control alliances.  The program promotes local and regional policy initiatives that address eliminating exposure to environment tobacco smoke; preventing the initiation of tobacco use among youth; promoting quitting among adults and youth; and identifying and eliminating tobacco-related disparities among specific population groups.  Two grants will be awarded.  One serving the Municipality of Anchorage and the other serving the North Star Borough and/or the Doyon Region.  Each grant will be for $68,000.  The deadline is August 12.  For more information, contact Larry Bussone at 907-465-5424 or visit http://www.hss.state.ak.us/dbh.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has funding available to provide services to women, frail elderly, or terminally ill homeless veterans.  The Homeless Providers Grant and Per Diem Program encourages collaboration with VA health care facilities in the delivery of homeless services.  The deadline is August 17.  For more information, contact Guy Liedke at 877-332-0334 or visit http://www.hudclips.org/sub_nonhud/cgi/nofarun.cgi.

The American Association of People with Disabilities is accepting applications for its Paul G. Hearne/AAPD 2004 Leadership Awards.  The award will honor up to three people with disabilities whose leadership achievements have helped disabled people, who have made connections between disabled individuals and others, and who have the potential to improve the quality of life for disabled people on a national level.  Each winner will receive $10,000.  The deadline is September 10.  For more information, contact Marie Campos at 800-840-8844 or visit www.aapd.com.

The John A. Hartford Foundation provides support to nonprofit organizations to increase their capacity to provide effective and affordable care to the elderly population.  A focus area for the Foundation is to integrate and improve health-related services.  The Foundation supports a limited number of projects that offer considerable potential for national impact in demonstrating integrated financing and care delivery for comprehensive geriatric services.  There is no deadline.  For more information, contact James O'Sullivan at 212-832-7788 or visit www.jhartfound.org/grantseekers.htm.

Toys R Us Children's Fund provides grants to nonprofit organizations that support the health and welfare of children.  A priority is given to preparing children to be lifelong readers.  One goal of the Fund is to increase a child's reading readiness before they enter kindergarten by engaging parents, supporting preschools and increasing access to books and other learning tools.  There is no deadline.  For more information, call 973-617-5350 or visit http://www4.toysrus.com/about/corpPhilanthropy.cfm.

Mission-Based Marketing: Positioning Your Not-for-Profit in an Increasingly Competitive World, Second Edition describes how charities can become market-oriented while remaining mission-based.  The author states that nonprofit organizations must be able to pinpoint the strengths and weaknesses of other groups that provide similar services, and remain responsive and flexible.  There is also a section on how to use email, websites, and other technology to augment marketing strategies.  The cost is $35.  For more information, call 800-225-5945 or visit www.wiley.com.

The beneficiaries of the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority include those Alaskans experiencing mental illness; developmental disabilities; chronic alcoholism; or Alzheimer's disease or related disorders.  You can learn more about the Trust at www.mhtrust.org.

The Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority's Small Projects Funding program is designed to create new services of direct benefit to Trust beneficiaries. 
These services are not normally funded by another part of government. They can be
innovative, new program ideas, or substantially improve and supplement existing activities.  They can also significantly increase the quality of ongoing projects.  Each small project is limited to a maximum of $10,000. The intent is to spend
half of the Small Projects Fund ($250,000 yearly) on high quality rural projects.
