Welcome to this List Serv sponsored by the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority’s Rural Funding Coordination Project.  These messages provide information about current government and private grants, conference and training opportunities, publications, and potential funding sources, with an emphasis on rural Alaska.

 

The Denali Commission is requesting letters of interest for potential funding for Health Care and Multi Use Facility Programs.  They are anticipating approximately $40 to $50 million for these projects by April 1, 2004.  Even though the Commission has not yet received any funding for 2004, they want to be prepared to allocate funds received in a timely manner.  The Commission is expanding its Health Care Facility Program beyond primary care facility improvements, and will place an emphasis on funding construction ready health facility projects.  There is no deadline for primary care clinics and frontier extended stay clinic/community health centers.  The deadline for rural hospital primary care improvements, assisted living facilities and behavioral health facilities is November 25.  For more information, contact Joel Neimeyer at 907-271-1459.  The Multi Use Facility Program is designed to encourage consolidation of compatible essential community services, eliminating duplication and increasing the efficiency of services that are delivered.  The deadline is November 19.  For more information, contact Rachael Petro at 907-271-1425.  To view all these programs, visit www.denali.gov.

 

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is accepting applications for its Knowledge Dissemination Conference Grants Program.  The purpose of the program is to disseminate knowledge about practices within the mental health services and substance abuse prevention and treatment fields, and integrating that knowledge into real-world practice.  The grants will fund up to 75 percent of the total direct costs of planned meetings and conferences.  Grant awards are expected to range from $25,000 to $50,000.  Indirect costs are not allowed.  The deadline is January 10.  For more information, contact David Morrissette at 301-443-3653 or visit www.samhsa.gov.

 

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is accepting letters of intent to apply for grants for research and evaluation projects under its Substance Abuse Policy Research Program.  Projects should identify, analyze, and evaluate public and private policies to reduce the harm caused by the use of tobacco, alcohol and illegal drugs.  The deadline is November 7.  For more information, contact Tracy Enright Patterson at 336-716-5170 or visit www.saprp.org.

Planned Giving Essentials: A Step-by –Step Guide to Success introduces planned-giving principles, defines key terms, and describes types of gifts.  It also offers suggestions for putting a planned-giving program in place.  The authors discuss recent trends in planned giving, such as the increasing use of commercial brokerages as conduits between donors and charities, and the growing use of the Internet and e-mail by elderly people, making it easier for organizations to promote planned giving online.  The cost is $72.00.  For more information, contact The Aspen Institute at 202-736-5838 or visit www.nonprofitresearch.org.

The Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority's Small Projects Funding program is designed to create new services of direct benefit to Trust beneficiaries.  These services are not normally funded by another part of government. They can be

innovative, new program ideas, or substantially improve and supplement existing activities.  They can also significantly increase the quality of ongoing projects.  Each small project is limited to a maximum of $10,000. The intent is to spend

half of the Small Projects Fund ($250,000 yearly) on high quality rural projects.
