Welcome to this List Serv sponsored by the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority’s Rural Funding Coordination Project.  These messages provide information about current government and private grants, conference and training opportunities, publications, and potential funding sources, with an emphasis on rural Alaska.

 

The Alaska Center for Rural Health is a private, nonprofit corporation housed within the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies.  Its mission is to help strengthen systems to deliver comprehensive and culturally relevant health care to rural Alaskans by providing information, coordination, technical assistance, and professional development to rural health providers and systems.  For more information, contact Beth Landon at 907-786-6589 or visit www.ichs.uaa.alaska.edu/acrh.

 

The Office of Applied Studies of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is accepting applications to support dissertation research involving data analysis on substance abuse services issues.  The purpose is to expand the number of researchers conducting high-quality substance abuse services research, and to study how various factors (social, financial, organizational, and personal) affect the need for and access to substance abuse treatment.   Students registered in an accredited academic doctoral degree program that requires a dissertation based on original research are eligible to apply.  Awards will range between $20,000 and $30,000 in total costs.  The deadline is July 2.  For more information, contact Sarah Duffy at 301-443-8565 or visit www.samhsa.gov.

 

The Aetna Foundation is accepting proposals to support programs to improve health-care access and services for racial and ethnic minorities.  The grants focus on cultural-competency training and educational programs to improve the delivery of appropriate health care, and on diseases that disproportionately affect racial minorities.  The grants range from $15,000 to $50,000.  The deadline is May 30.  For more information, contact Chris Montross at 860-273-7580 or visit www.aetna.com/foundation.

 

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and the National Quality Forum are accepting applications for the John M. Eisenberg 2003 Patient Safety Awards.  The awards recognize the achievement of individuals who have made lasting and significant contributions to improving patient safety, particularly in the areas of advocacy, research or system innovation.  The deadline is May 27.  For more information, call

The Alaska Airlines Foundation supports organizations that enhance a community’s cultural and economic vitality, and improve the quality of life for its citizens.  Their focus areas include healthcare, education, social and cultural programs, and community activities.  Grants range from $5,000 to 15,000.  The deadline is June 30.  For more information, contact Donna Hartman at 206-433-3383.

The Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority's Small Projects Funding program is designed to create new services of direct benefit to Trust beneficiaries.  These services are not normally funded by another part of government. They can be

innovative, new program ideas, or substantially improve and supplement existing activities.  They can also significantly increase the quality of ongoing projects.  Each small project is limited to a maximum of $10,000. The intent is to spend

half of the Small Projects Fund ($250,000 yearly) on good rural projects.
