Summer Fun Walk/Run New and beginning walkers and joggers are invited to join a small group for one hour trail excursions each Wednesday. The group, spanning ages 18 and older, meets at 5:50 pm at various location, but usually on the east side of Anchorage. It's free. Call 337-4007 for recorded information, including meeting place.
Biking
Check those brakes; it's downhill time. Cyclists meet at 7 pm Tuesday, Aug. 1 at Service High School to shuttle cars up to the Glen Alps parking lot, then they ride back to the school. 345-7482
The Touring Division of the Arctic Bicycle Club sponsors rides around the Anchorage Area. Helmets are required, and eye protection and insect repellent are highly recommended. (www.arcticbike.org, 566-0177)
Work your leg muscles on a Portage-to-Turnagain Pass ride. Cyclists meet at 9 am Saturday, July 29, at the Carrs Huffman bakery to car pool or at 10 am at the Portage Glacier parking lot near the visitor center for 24 miles of strenuous hills. Wear bright clothes, bring lots of food and water and be prepared for head winds and possible rain. 349-8164
Tour de Anchorage riders meet at 10 am Sunday, July 30, at the Service High School pool to shuttle cars to the end of the tour. This is a 50-kilometer ride east to west on dirt and paved trails 349-8164
The Mountain Bike Division of the Arctic Bicycle Club host the Kincaid Relay at 10 am Saturday, July 29, at Kincaid Par. Registration is from 8 to 9:30 am Cost is $10 with pre-registration, $15 day of race. 245-5088

Swimming
Keep in shape at local highschool pools. Cost is $2.75 for kids, and $4.25 for adults, with punch cards available.
Diamond High, 2909 W. 88th Ave., hold lap swims from 5:30 to 7:30 am weekdays and 6 to 7:30 pm Mondays thru Thursdays and water exercise classes from 6:10 to 7:10 pm Mondays thru Wednesdays.
West High, 1700 Hillcrest Drive, hosts lap swims from 5:30 to 7:30 am weekdays, 10 to 11 am Saturdays, 5:30 to 7 pm Sundays and 11:15 am to 12:15 pm Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
East High, 4025 E. Northern Lights Blvd., has lap swims from 5:30 to 7:30 am weekdays and 5:30 to 7 pm Saturdays
Service High, 5577 Abbott Road, holds lap swims from 5:30 to
7:30 am and 5:30 to 7:30 pm weekdays.
Swim in a heated pool at the Alaska Club East, 5201 E. Tudor Road. Classes are various times Mondays and Wednesdays, Tuesdays and Thursdays or Saturdays. Cost is $40 to $55. (337-9550)
Let the kids swim and skate themselves silly for half-price every Friday at the UAA Sports Center. Pool time is 7:30 to 9:30 pm, rink time is 8:15 to 10 pm. Parents must accompany children, skates are not available for rental. Cost is $1.50 per child. (786-1231)
