They tentatively have the training scheduled for May 9-10. The training will be held in Juneau--they do not currently have a training scheduled in Anchorage. I do not anticipate them scheduling an Anchorage presentation as they had videotaped their last session and will use that for outreach purposes. The video is scheduled to be completed by the end of May. When optimal medication regimens are combined with skills training, cognitive rehabilitation, environmental modifications and supports, and self-management techniques, outcomes are improved, and a higher proportion of patients demonstrate treatment gains. This workshop will cover recent advances in psychiatric rehabilitation practices, focusing on techniques with demonstrated effectivenss that can be implemented within inpatient, outpatient, day hospital or residential settings. Participants will gain an understanding of the rationale for, and current practices in, the areas of social skills training, cognitive rehabilitation, developing incentive programs, and therapeutic contracting. Steven Silverstein, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry, and the Program Director for the Psychiatric Disorders Division at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He has established two comprehensive inpatient behavioral rehabilitation programs that have received national recognition: The University Services Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program in Rochester, New York and the Second Chance Program in White Plains, New York. He has also served as a consultant to numerous hospitals and outpatient programs throughout the country in the areas of psychiatric rehabilitation and program development.

7/7/04     The Alaska Council on Homelessness will meet at 8:30 am on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at the Permanent Fund Office, Hugh Malone Board Room, 801 W. 10th Street, #302, Juneau, Alaska.  The agenda will include comments from the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness, a report on the status of collecting data on homelessness in Alaska, and presentations from various state agencies on the impact of homelessness on their respective programs and services. The public is invited to attend the meeting, but should be aware that provisions for public testimony have been scheduled for a later meeting date. Workshops will afford opportunities for participants to learn about Maryland's specialty courts for criminal offenders with mental illness and substance abuse, services for incarcerated individuals, Maryland's guardianship and surrogate decision making process, efforts to implement the Olmstead decision in Maryland, and how to interview the criminal defendant.
